My name is Maiko, the baker and cook behind The Chestnut Bakery where I create indulgent vegan desserts. I welcome all eaters who love good food!
The Chestnut Bakery was officially born in 2020.
One of my greatest passions has been baking and cooking, and
I want to share this passion with you all after creating so many vegan recipes!
To me, the vegan diet and lifestyle are not dull or boring.
On the contrary; it’s such a fun, kind and colourful way to eat and live sustainably.
My goal is to inspire as many people as possible to get baking and cooking with more plant-based ingredients and to feel that they are the best version of themselves.

Q&A
When did you go vegan and why?
Back in 2014 I went vegetarian and transitioned to vegan in 2017.
Initially, I chose to go vegetarian because I had skin problems and I found a wonderful book called
“Eat Pretty” which was inspirational and I highly recommend you read it as well!
Later, I learned about the abhorrent impact of animal products on the planet and the cruelty behind such practices and industries.
I love animals and our home planet, so the natural choice was to transition to the vegan lifestyle.
I’m gathering resources regarding the vegan diet and the environment at the moment, so stay tuned for future updates on this!
Where did you learn to bake and cook?
I was initially trained at my aunt’s cafe where I helped pour coffee and picked up the basics of cafe life and everything about baking cakes.
The very first recipe my aunt taught me was a strawberry shortcake, which was surprisingly easy and delicious. Since then, I’ve always been an avid baker and now I create my own recipes and bake professionally!
Why is your blog called “The Chestnut Bakery”?
The word “Chestnut” is part of my family name!
My family name means “Chestnut Island” in Japanese and that’s where my blog’s name was born.
Do you collaborate with brands?
Yes, I do! I love working with brands whose services and products align with my values.
I exclusively work with brands that promote vegan and cruelty-free products that I personally love and would recommend to my audience.
